Liao Zhengjun graduated from Yangzhou University with a major in Art and Design in 2008 and worked in Shanghai with an annual salary of over 100,000. How did an artist end up raising turkeys?
During the summer of his third year in college, Liao Zhengjun saw his family raising turkeys. Later, he discovered in a Shanghai supermarket that turkeys were sold at a high price. After inquiring about the wholesale price and comparing it with the breeding costs in his hometown, he was tempted.
With the 4,000 yuan he had saved, he returned to his hometown to start a business by the end of that year. He rented a few rooms and bought 300 turkey poults. However, as he raised them, he found that male and female turkeys were the same size, eating a lot but not growing. After seeking advice from various sources, he learned that domestic turkey poults were all inbred, and to raise them well, he needed to buy hatching eggs from abroad, which were 20 times more expensive. Many times when Liao Zhengjun couldn't even pull out 10 yuan from his pocket, he gritted his teeth, sold the first batch of turkeys at a low price for 20,000 yuan, and bought 100 foreign hatching eggs.
This step was crucial. Although the hatching eggs were few, their reproductive capacity was strong. The inventory reached over 2,000 turkeys in one year, and their weight grew to over 20 catties. He then scraped together another 10,000 yuan to promote them online. The villagers were stunned; customers from all over the country would come to their remote village to see the goods. Opportunities followed.
"A major client from Fujian called. I thought he wouldn't be interested in a few thousand, so I said we could supply tens of thousands a year. He said, 'Okay, if you have that quantity, we'll sign the contract immediately.'" Liao Zhengjun admitted that the internet helped him. He learned a lot of information about breeders in other provinces online. At the same time, with the support of the county and township governments, he established a breeding cooperative, invited experts for training, and used remote education multimedia software for online lectures... Organizing supply online and expanding the cooperative offline, he finally successfully completed this large order.
Yancheng has a "Turkey King"! Liao Zhengjun became famous. More and more people cooperated, and his girlfriend quit her job to marry him and start a business together. He borrowed 1 million yuan to lease 1,000 mu of land, upgraded the farm to an ecological manor, and extended to deep processing.
